Competitiveness of the Hong Kong Economy: A Study on Productivity Growth, Unit Labour Costs & Structural Changes in Export Composition

This study seeks to analyse the competitiveness of Hong Kong's economy from three separate angles so as to arrive at a more robust conclusion, and to identify aspects which need attentions¡V

Total factor productivity growth of the whole economy ¡V Carrying out growth accounting exercises to identify the patterns in total factor productivity growth and to detect any structural changes in productivity growth before and after the Asian financial crisis.

Labour productivity growth in manufacturing and service sectors ¡V Estimating unit labour costs for different sectors in Hong Kong and making comparison with her major competitors. This would help answer questions as to whether Hong Kong's cost of production has outpaced her major competitors and if so, in which sectors.

Merchandise export competitiveness using dynamic shift-share analysis ¡V Investigating export growth by major commodity categories between Hong Kong and a set of reference economies that export broadly similar categories of goods to similar markets. This can reveal in which areas Hong Kong's export competitiveness lies.

Conducted jointly by Professor Xie Danyang, Professor Wei Xiangdong and Professor Li Hongyi from June 2006 to January 2007, the study provides evidence on competitiveness of Hong Kong's economy at both the aggregate level and the sectoral level with policy recommendations.

The Convenor of the Study Group for this project is Professor KC Chan.
