The Centre’s weekly analysis looks into the meaning of the official poverty line and its impact on the society. The article examines how factors such as household income, income gaps, minimum wage and standard working hours may affect the poverty line. It points out that the poverty line could only serve as a preliminary reference, instead of a rigid standard for social policy making. Integrating findings of the Centre’s previous study on ‘Poverty alleviation – what can the business sector do?’, the analysis encourages business enterprises to help the underprivileged families in many different ways.
