Poverty alleviation has become a priority of Hong Kong’s policy agenda. In an attempt to understand the poverty problem in Hong Kong and the roles of the Government and the business sector in addressing the issue, the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre jointly organised a Forum on ‘Poverty Alleviation and the Role of the Business Sector’ with The Hong Kong Council of Social Service on 14 June 2013 at the Academy of Medicine.
The Forum was a follow-up of the Centre’s recent study on ‘Poverty alleviation – What can the business sector do?’, which strives to look into the poverty issue and provide constructive recommendations on how the business sector could extend the breadth and depth of its poverty reduction work in addition to giving donations.
The Forum brought together renowned experts, decision makers and opinion leaders to explore different aspects of the issue. The Chief Secretary and Chairperson of the Commission on Poverty Carrie Lam addressed the Forum by delivering opening remarks, while Chief Executive of The Hong Kong Council of Social Service Christine Fang, Chairman of the Community Care Fund Task Force under the Commission of Poverty Dr Law Chi-kwong, Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce Pang Yiu-kai and Lecturer of CUHK’s Faculty of Social Science Division of Global Political Economy Stephen Wong took part in a Panel Discussion chaired by the Centre’s Vice-chairman Lau Ming-wai.
The Panel Discussion was followed by a Case Sharing Session moderated by Cliff Choi, Business Director (Public Engagement and Partnership) of The Hong Kong Council of Social Service, where representatives of large corporations, SMEs and small businesses were invited to share their experiences in helping the underprivileged with asset building.
